In the spring of 2020, Koji Tashima, 54, an executive of Asahi Shimbun, resigned in response to the company's desire to retire and recruit. The 52-year-old job-hopper is Huawei Japan, a Japanese legal person of Chinese communications equipment giant Huawei, which is in trouble because of US restrictions.

Mr. Tashima, who joined Asahi Shimbun during the bubble and has accumulated a career as an economic journalist, stood at the forefront of crisis management in 2014 as the company's publicity agency, which was popular because of the cancellation of the comfort women report, the non-publication of the Ikei column, and the cancellation of the Yoshida transcripts. Affected by a series of problems, the then president resigned and Asahi Shimbun was in a desperate situation.

"it's also a PR tactic to push criticism back, but it's a mistake," Tashima said. After the end of the scandal, he learned public relations skills from scratch and gradually realized his second career.

After graduating from Keio University, Tashima joined Asahi Shimbun in 1992. The era of journalists walked in the economic field, covering the bursting of the bubble and the acquisition of radio stations by Livedoor and Rakuten.

Journalists act as managers known as "desks" in their 40s and usually leave the scene of the interview. After that, some were promoted to the senior level of the local stronghold and the head office of the so-called general director and bureau director, and in their mid-50s, many of them moved to positions other than editors, including affiliated companies. After serving as director of the General Administration of Saga at his desk in Fukuoka, Tashima became deputy director of the propaganda department at the age of 47 in April 2014.

"I've even been a general director, and I think it's a bad company career," Mr. Tashima said. " Although they have no experience in public relations, journalists have a lot of contacts with public relations personnel in enterprises and administrative departments. "this is a less busy department, and both the company and I think we can turn a blind eye."

But that was a big mistake.
