On June 22, 2021, a webinar was held at the Nikkei x 36Kr seminar titled "Anatomy Tencent - Game Business, Cloud Utilization World". This is Nikkei's joint venture with Chinese tech site 36Kr and marks the second Tencent-themed seminar. I have already reported on the trends in the Chinese game industry, but this time I would like to introduce Tencent's new services, which are the main subject. By the way, Tencent is known in the game industry for its investments, including many corporate acquisitions, but it was originally a company that made a name for itself with QQ, a messenger app that runs on Windows. It seems that MSN messenger was the mainstream in China at first, but QQ was installed when Windows was installed, so it was the only messenger in China. It's been a messenger company for a long time, and it's been doing online games, but it's mostly casual mini-games. With the advent of the smartphone era, WeChat has become even stronger. This is an app that is equivalent to LINE in Japan. I also heard that WeChat was used as a reference when developing LINE, so the innovativeness was quite conspicuous. I often traveled to China for ChinaJoy coverage, but before I knew it, the world had changed in a few years. Business talk is "WeChat", game materials are "WeChat", convenience store payments are "WeChat", and company salaries are also paid on WeChat. The game itself is also launched from WeChat. It's easy to understand if you think that the most popular champion in China is League of Legends, which uses Chinese characters. By the way, Riot, which made LoL, is also owned by Tencent. In China, it is difficult for overseas companies to develop Internet services, so independent IT companies are growing. Mr. Zhao Weilin of Itochu Research Institute introduced that what people call GAFA becomes BATH in China. It stands for Baidu, the search king equivalent to Google, Alibaba, the e-commerce king like Amazon, Tencent, the communication king like Facebook, and Huawei, the smartphone king like Apple. There may be some differences between Huawei and Apple in terms of business. As for Tencent, it's more like a collection of Twitter, Skype, etc. than a social network like Facebook, but it's also a huge company that creates a global group in the game industry.
