Finally, the Balmuda coffee maker has been released. The price is extremely high at just under 60,000 yen, but the taste of drip coffee is certainly outstanding. It's a dish made for lazy people like me who neglect to measure the temperature and amount of hot water when doing hand drip and drink coffee with a different taste every time. If you like the taste of strong and clear coffee and the production of Balmuda, you will be satisfied.

Not at a level that you can drink at home (in a good way)

BALMUDA The Brew is a coffee maker exclusively for drip. There is no grinder to grind coffee beans, and espresso extraction is not possible. Use a commercially available conical paper filter (for 4 cups) for the dripper. In short, it is a machine that pours hot water into coffee powder.

The feature is a technique called "bypass pouring" in which only 3/4 of the total amount of coffee is extracted and then hot water is added. In the latter half of the extraction, the miscellaneous taste (astringency) of coffee will be added, so stop pouring with 1/4 left. A strong coffee extract is mixed with hot water to make coffee with a clear taste.

It is finely adjusted according to the household voltage and room temperature so that the same taste can be obtained. The extraction time varies depending on the mode, and it is about 3 and a half to 6 and a half minutes depending on the number of cups. Each cup is 120ml, and the Iittala Teema mug (0.3L) that we use is enough to put two cups in it. Up to 3 cups could be extracted at one time, and 3 cups were just the right amount to share with my wife.

The first thing I tried was "regular". Since it is a coffee bean that you can easily buy, I tried it with Cardi's "Premium Blend" and Starbucks' "TOKYO Roast", and both of them gave a clear finish while giving out the taste and aroma of the beans. There is no miscellaneous taste, habit, or unpleasant aftertaste, and it is a taste that seems to be gulping during work. My wife also praised it as "delicious".

When compared to her wife, which is better, hand drip or balmuda regular, she immediately answered "overwhelmingly balmuda" and cried. President Balmuda Gen Terao said that the coffee brewed at BALMUDA The Brew was "not at home (the level offered at the store)", but at least not at home.

The next thing I tried was "Strong," an extraction mode that does not divide with hot water, which gives straightforward performance in controlling the amount of hot water. As the name suggests, the taste and aroma of beans are strongly felt, and it is also a good feeling to notice in the morning. The TOKYO roast, which has a particularly strong bitterness, has a vivid impression. At the tasting party held by Balmuda at a cafe in Daikanyama, I often heard the voice saying "Strong is delicious". I personally recommend it as a strong one. I think I should have changed this to "regular" and the regular to a name such as "clear".

The last is "ice", which is an extraction mode that can be made even darker than strong. Assuming that it is diluted with ice, it is possible to extract a rich extract that is less than strong and produce a cup with a strong taste and aroma. This is also delicious. If you add 1: 1 milk instead of ice, you will get a delicious coffee milk that has a strong coffee taste and you can feel the sweetness of the milk. It seems that it is delicious to divide it with alcohol and make a cocktail, so you will want to try various things.
