The development of "20H1", which will be Windows 10 Ver.2004, is nearing completion. Windows Insider Preview has already been distributed on Slow Ring since last year, and is in the stage of cumulative update distribution. The latest version is Build 19041.172, which began distribution on March 27, Japan time.

WSL2 was also available in preview build 19041.172 for Windows 10 Home edition

The biggest change in 20H1 is WSL2 (Windows Subsystem for Linux 2). Other than that, it's surprisingly small, but it's not without useful features such as reinstalling Windows using a cloud image and registering the start menu of a hosted application (simply like a script program). ..

For the time being, this time, although it is not the verification in the final version, it seems that the installation method of WSL2 etc. has been decided, so I will summarize that. As for WSL2 itself, I have already explained it, so for the time being, I will post a link to the articles related to WSL2 so far.

How to install WSL2

WSL1 can be installed from "Programs and Features"-> "Turn Windows features on or off" in the control panel (hereinafter referred to as "Turn Windows features on or off" because it is long). WSL2, on the other hand, has long been only installable using PowerShell commands. However, with the preview build 19041.153, the PowerShell command is no longer needed.

To briefly explain the procedure, after installing WSL1, download the Linux kernel dedicated to WSL2 and convert the distribution installed for WSL1 to WSL2.

After the official distribution of 20H1, the Linux kernel will be distributed by Windows Update. Furthermore, one distribution package can only work with either version 1 or version 2. In other words, the same Ubuntu-18.04 distribution for WSL only exists in either version 1 or 2.

The WSL function of "Turn Windows features on or off" has been changed from "Windows Subsystem for Linux" up to 19H2 (Windows 10 Ver.1909) to "Windows Subsystem for Linux". Use this to install WSL. However, the English notation has not changed in "Windows Subsystem for Linux", and it may be just a problem of translation of the Japanese version.

Enable "Windows Subsystem for Linux" in "Control Panel"-> "Programs and Features"-> "Turn Windows features on or off"

Imagewise, WSL2 is one of the WSL distribution's operating modes (expressed as version in the WSL command), with WSL having the traditional "version 1" and the "version 2" added from 20H1. is. For this reason, please note that the term WSL hereafter means both version 1 and version 2.

However, a virtual machine support environment is required to start the version 2 environment. This is also done in "Turn Windows features on or off". WSL2 was also able to work on Windows 10 Home edition. You can't use Hyper-V in the Home edition, but as promised, the 20H10 will be able to run WSL2 with virtual machine support.

To do so, enable or disable the "Virtual Machine Platform" (in English, Virtual Machine Platform) at the same time in "Turn Windows features on or off". Both require a reboot to activate, so it's less time-consuming to do them at the same time.

At the same time, enable "Virtual Machine Platform"

You can also enable "WSL" and "Virtual Machine Platform" from PowerShell on the command line.

dism.exe / online / enable-feature / featurename: Microsoft-Windows-Subsystem-Linux / all /norestartdism.exe / online / enable-feature / featurename: VirtualMachinePlatform / all / norestart

If you don't add the "/ norestart" option, it won't restart automatically, so you'll have to manually restart it. The feature name that can be used on the current Windows (this is called online in dism) can be displayed with the following command, and the installation status can also be confirmed.

dism.exe / Online / Get-Features

dism is a Windows installation image processing command. / online means running Windows, and Features is a function of Windows. You can do the same thing as "Turn Windows features on or off", and the / Get-Features option shows the configurable features.

"Turn Windows features on or off" takes a long time to open, so if you want to do it quickly, you should use the command line (you need administrator privileges).

Another thing is that the virtual machine support function may be turned off at the factory on some PCs. This needs to be changed in firmware (UEFI). This is not explained because the screen and display are completely different depending on the manufacturer and model. However, in recent PCs, the virtual machine support function is enabled at the time of shipment, and there are some models that do not have a setting item in the firmware.

First, start Task Manager, select CPU in the Performance tab, and check if "Virtualization" at the bottom of the graph is "Enabled". If it is "valid", no firmware operation is required.

If the virtual machine support function (Intel VT, AMDv, etc.) is enabled on the firmware side, "Virtualization" in the Performance tab of Task Manager is "Enabled".

In Windows 10, you can call the firmware setting screen (actually restart) from "Settings" → "Update and Security" → "Recovery" → "Customize PC startup", but the firmware at startup You should be able to enter by hitting the F8 key repeatedly on the screen.

On tablets, etc., turn off the power, hold down the volume key and press the power button to turn on the power, and you should be able to enter the firmware setting screen. Microsoft's official procedure is this, but there may be machines out there that don't. The surest way is to launch it from the settings page.
