When using Windows, the Japanese input function IME is indispensable. While entering text, hit the key many times to convert, and then type the next character.

In fact, did you know that there is a Microsoft IME-specific shortcut key that might make this repetitive work a little easier?

For example, in my IME, if you enter the word ``Afurika megaeru'', which is a kind of frog, and convert it, you will get ``Afurika stuffed'' and the original katakana part will be hiragana + kanji. put away. In such a case, cancel the conversion, normally look at the position of the [F7] key and extend your finger there to change it to full-width katakana, but you don't have to bother to move your hand to the function key at the top of the keyboard. Ctrl+I gives the same behavior. Also, if you press [Ctrl] + [Backspace] immediately after confirming, it will be reconverted and you can correct the erroneous part without re-entering it.

If you just convert "Afurikatsu megaeru", hiragana and kanji are mixed. If you want to change everything to katakana, you can not only use the [F7] key, but also the [Ctrl] + [I] keys

Here, Among the shortcut keys provided in the standard Microsoft IME for Windows 10, relatively convenient ones are introduced according to the situation such as "while entering characters", "while converting characters", and "after entering characters". The number of shortcut keys registered in MS-IME is not so many, and you can easily remember them.

Please note that the shortcut keys introduced below may be assigned as different functions depending on the editor you use, and may not work properly. Here, the operation is confirmed using the Windows 10 standard "Notepad".

As mentioned at the beginning, full-width katakana conversion during character input can be performed not only with the [F7] key, but also with the [Ctrl] + [I] key. Of course, not only full-width katakana, but also hiragana/half-width katakana/full-width alphanumeric/half-width alphanumeric shortcut keys are available as shown in the table below.

katakana conversion without using Fn key and MS-IME Hayawaza that reconverts fixed characters

< tr>
Operation keyInput
[Ctrl]+[U]Convert to "Hiragana"
[Ctrl]+[I]Convert to "Katakana"
[Ctrl]+[O]Convert to "half-width katakana"
[Ctrl]+[P]Convert to full-width alphanumeric characters
[Ctrl]+[T]Convert to half-width alphanumeric characters

Some people may say that they can type without looking at the function keys, but on laptops, the position varies slightly depending on the product. If you remember this method of conversion without dropping your eyes at the keyboard, you may be able to continue typing without breaking the rhythm of typing.

Even if you press the space key after entering characters, it is often converted with the wrong phrase, resulting in strange Japanese. In such a case, press the [Esc] key to cancel the conversion, but you can also cancel by pressing the [Ctrl] (or Shift) + [BackSpace] key.

Operation keyConverting (before confirmation)
[Ctrl or Shift]+[BackSpace] Restore the converted clause to the state before conversion
[Shift]+[Esc]Converted clause
You can return to the state

Also, [Ctrl] + [BackSpace] has a function to convert the confirmed character again, which is also convenient. For example, it is one of the common scenes in Japanese input that when you convert and confirm the input character once, you confirm with the wrong kanji, erase the character and retype it again. In that case, you can return to the conversion state again by pressing [Ctrl] + [Backspace] without pressing any other keys such as cursor keys.

[Ctrl]+[BackSpace]
Even if you confirm with "Last yesterday", do not perform any other operations [Ctr] If you press +[Backspace], you can return to the state during conversion

If you make an input error such as inserting an extra character while entering characters, or if the conversion does not go as expected , use the cursor keys to move the cursor to delete the corresponding character or adjust the position of the phrase.

Like the function keys, the cursor keys are also located away from the home position, so you need to move your right hand away from the home position. You can adjust the length of the phrase.

Operation keyInputConverting (before confirmation)
[Ctrl]+[A]Move cursor to start of character
[Ctrl]+[F] Move cursor to end of character
Ctrl+SMove cursor to left of character
[Ctrl]+[D]Move cursor right of character
[Ctrl]+[K ]Move cursor left of characterReduce clause length by one character
[Ctrl]+[L ]Move cursor to right of characterIncrease clause length by one character

[ Ctrl]+[A]/[F] keys work as [Home]/[End] keys, and [Ctrl]+[S]/[D] replaces [←]/[→]. Regarding actions during character input, [Ctrl]+[K]/[L] are also functions of [←]/[→]. It works as [Shift]+[←]/[→] to increase/decrease

The following are shortcuts for entering half-width/full-width spaces, shortcuts for [Delete]/[Backspace], shortcuts for deleting by word, shortcuts for moving the cursor by word, and IME pad It is a shortcut key for displaying the dialog box of "radical/chord conversion".

As a function that uses function keys in Japanese input, it is often used to convert input characters to katakana or half-width alphanumeric characters. As a shortcut for that, I introduced a shortcut that combines the [Ctrl] key at the beginning. Below are the functions assigned to each function key.

Operation keysInput
[F5]IME pad Display the "Radical/Code Conversion" dialog box
[F6]Convert to "Hiragana"
[F7]Convert to "katakana"
[F8]"half-width katakana"
[F9]Convert to full-width alphanumerics
[F10]Convert to "half-width alphanumeric characters"

Actually, the function key is also a shortcut that combines the [Ctrl] key exists. Although it is not used so much, there are functions such as [Ctrl] + [F7] key to call the "Register Word" dialog box, and [Ctrl] + [F8] key to search for input characters. However, the search function requires a search provider setting, and pressing the corresponding key may only call the Windows 10 help and may not work well.

[Ctrl] +[F7]NoneOpen Register Word dialog box
[Ctrl]+[F8]Search default search provider for typed charactersNone
Ctrl+F9Choose a search provider for the characters you typedNone
